I was married off at a very young age to a man from another village. Years later, my husband deserted me. Now, I have dignity and economic security. All three of my children can go to school, and I’m also able to support other female Artisans in my village.

With no education or options, a friend brought me to a brothel to work. I eventually ran my own. I recruited girls into the brothels myself. Today, I go into the same neighborhoods filled with brothels that I used to work in so that I can bring women and girls out of the dark life of exploitation and help them experience true freedom.

  • Prevention

When a woman has a living wage job (like making fair trade accessories) she and her children are less likely to be trafficked. Traffickers often prey on people who lack stable, livable wages.

  • Education

When a little girl's mom is earning a living wage, she can go to school. For every year of school that a girl attends, she’s 6% less likely to be trafficked.

  • Healing

Statistically, 80% of human trafficking survivors find themselves back with traffickers. But when a survivor has a safe, dignified job, they're more likely to continue on their healing journey.

FAQ

How can accessories alleviate poverty & human trafficking?

Today, millions of women around are in cycles of poverty due to the lack of job opportunities. This forces mothers to give up their kids to orphanages and propels human trafficking. By creating those job opportunities, women are able to provide for their kids, send them to school, and save for the feature. They can break their generational cycle of poverty and ensure their children have a better life.

When you shop our ethically made accessories, you're creating more jobs for women to lead their families out of poverty and human trafficking.

Is this charity work?

No. We've traveled around the world and heard the same thing over and over again from women facing poverty:

They don't want charity.
They just want an opportunity.

We are a business that alleviates poverty through dignified business partnerships with our Artisans. Our Artisan Partners are extremely talented. We show them the honor that they deserve through fair, dignified business transactions.

How much are Artisans paid?

Great question. We also value people being paid fairly for their work.

Our Artisan Partners are paid 100% of their asking price upfront. Varying country to country, they receive a living wage for their region so they can provide for, educate their kids, and save for the future. Clivia from Haiti says, “I love when I hear there are new orders and I’m able to come to work the next day! Trades of Hope and this Artisan community have helped by providing jobs.”

How do you find women to work with?

Historically, we have connected with our Artisans' communities through our background working in Haiti and through referrals. Today, Artisan communities can fill out our Artisan Application. We thoroughly vet the communities we partner with to ensure all parties have Artisans' best interest at heart above all else.
